Beauty and the Wolf by Marina Myles

Non ho potuto resistere e ho letto questa nuova versione della mia favola preferita La Bella  e la Bestia, che in questo caso si intitola Beauty and the Wolf, ed è il primo libro della serie The Cursed Princes, a cui farà seguito l'uscita del secondo libro dal titolo Snow White and the Vampire. Come si intuisce dai titoli l'autrice ha voluto mischiare i personaggi delle classiche favole con le creature del mondo paranormal.

The Wolf nel caso della prima storia è in realtà un werewolf, un licantropo.

Il matrimonio di Isabella Farrington è stato un evento affrettato. Lord Draven, l'uomo facoltoso che è appena diventato suo marito, è temuto, evitato e su di lui circolano diverse chiacchiere fra la gente. Nonostante tutto questo, Isabella prova una profonda attrazione nei confronti del suo aspetto da bel tenebroso, la sua forza e il fascino che riesce a emanare con la stessa facilità di un battito di ciglia di Isabella. Lei è la figlia di un esperto in Egittologia economicamente in difficoltà e sa che ci sono pettegolezzi anche su di lei e sull'amuleto che indossa. Niente di più che chiacchiere superstiziose...

Ma quando Isabella torna nella sperduta proprietà di Draven, percepisce che c'è di più oltre alla superstizione nei sinistri giardini di Thorncliff Towers. Draven è passionale e seducente, ma possiede anche un lato brutale e incontrollabile e un passato pieno di segreti. Per vivere in pace Isabella deve scoprire le ragioni che si celano dietro a una maledizione lanciata da una zingara e alla freddezza di una madre verso il proprio figlio. Soprattutto quando scopre che Draven crede che la sua giovane sposa sia destinata a un destino ancora più cupo che il suo.

Visto l'ambientazione della storia potrei definire questo libro un paranormal regency. Paranormal visto la presenza del licantropo e regency per tutto il resto del contesto.

La storia è carina e molto ben scritta; pur prendendo spunto dal classico La Bella e la Bestia, la trama è arricchita con un po' di mistero legato alla maledizione di cui è vittima Draven, legato alla cultura degli zingari, e Isabella a sua volta, col suo amuleto richiama il fascino delle maledizioni legate all'antico Egitto.

La storia fra Draven e Isabella, e il loro matrimonio, nasce con dei presupposti particolari: lei in realtà vuole finanziare una nuova spedizione del padre in Egitto, per le sue ricerche, quindi tutt'altro che propositi romantici; Draven invece è al corrente della storia dell'amuleto della ragazza e crede di aver forse trovato una "soluzione" per risolvere il suo problema legato alla maledizione da cui è afflitto. Ma poi i due si ritrovano coinvolti in un tira e molla causata dall'attrazione che provano l'uno per l'altra e i segreti di Draven che non vuole fare del male alla donna e ha paura di perdere il controllo

Draven e Isabella mi sono piaciuti molto come personaggi e la trama non scontata come invece ci si poteva aspettare, grazie anche agli altri personaggi presenti nel libro.

Ora sono curiosa su cosa succederà in Snow White and the Vampire.

I couldn't resist and I read this new version of my favorite fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, which in this case is called Beauty and the Wolf, and is the first book in the series The Cursed Princes, followed by the release of the second book titled Snow White and the Vampire. As you can imagine from the title the author wanted to mix the characters of classic fairy tales with the creatures of the paranormal world.

The Wolf in the case of the first story is actually a werewolf.

Isabella Farrington’s marriage was hasty. For all her new husband’s riches, Lord Draven Winthrop is whispered about, avoided, and feared. Yet Isabella is drawn to Draven’s dark good looks, his strength, the charm he can turn on as easily as she can blink. The impoverished daughter of an Egyptologist, she knows there are rumors about her, too, and the amulet she wears. Nothing more than superstitious babble…

But when Isabella returns to Draven’s remote coastal manor, she senses there is something more at work in the grim gardens of Thorncliff Towers than superstition. Draven is passionate and seductive, but he has a brutal, uncontrolled side too, and a history of secrets. To live in peace she must discover the reasons behind a gypsy curse and a mother’s scorn. Especially when she learns Draven believes his sweet young bride is doomed to a fate even darker than his own…

Reading the setting of the story I could define this book a paranormal regency. Paranormal for the presence of the werewolf and regency for the rest of the context.

The story is cute and very well written; while taking a cue from the classic beauty and the beast, the plot is enriched with a bit of mystery tied to the Draven's gipsy curse, and to Isabella and her amulet which is related to the the charm of ancient Egypt curses.

The story between Draven and Isabella, and their marriage was born with no romantics: she actually wants to fund his father's expedition in Egypt, for his research; Draven is aware of the story of the amulet of the girl and believed to have perhaps found a "solution" to solve his problem to the curse that afflicted him. But then the two find themselves involved in a push and pull caused by the attraction that proves for each other and the secrets of Draven who does not want to hurt the woman and he's afraid to lose control.

 I liked very much like the characters Isabella and Draven and the plot is not obvious as we could expect, thanks also to the other characters in the book.

Now I'm curious about what will happen in Snow White and the Vampire.

Bite Me by PJ Schnyder

Primo libro della serie London Undead, che sembra essere una serie molto promettente, nella quale umani e licantropi si trovano a fronteggiare la minaccia creata da zombie e nella quale le due specie separatamente sono alla ricerca di risposte sull'origine della nascita di queste creature. I licantropi sono immuni all'infezione e potrebbero essere dei potenti alleati per gli umani, ma diffidenza e pregiudizi tra le due specie rendono impossibile un'alleanza. Vampiri e fae invece si mantengono per ora al di fuori di tutto, ma non è detto che in futuro nella serie non entrino a far parte dei giochi, visto che vengono nominati nel libro.

Poche persone osano avventurarsi per le strade di Londra durante la notte, dalla comparsa degli zombie, ma questo per Seth non è un problema. Essendo un licantropo è in grado di badare a se stesso e aiutare gli umani in pericolo durante le sue uscite notturne. Durante una sua ronda si imbatte in un gruppo di umani sotto attacco. L'unica donna coraggiosa tanto da tenere testa agli zombie difendendosi cattura l'attenzione di Seth, e non solo per la sua capacità nel maneggiare la pistola. Il sapere che la giovane donna è priva di una casa, aumenta ancora di più l'istinto di proteggerla e prendersi cura di lei, che il licantropo prova nei suoi confronti.

Maisie non può fare a meno di sentirsi attratta dal licantropo accorso in suo aiuto. È affascinata dalla sua forza e ferocia e si ritrova ad aprirsi nei suoi confronti in un modo che non le era mai capitato prima, anche se è determinata a non far conto su Seth o nessun altro. Non vuole che un'altra persona rimanga ferita o muoia per salvare lei. Ha già abbastanza ferite, fisiche ed emotive, che hanno origine dal passato...

Ma quando Seth si rende conto che in qualche modo gli zombie sono attirati da Maisie, c'è il rischio che il licantropo non possa più intervenire in suo aiuto.

Trama e ambientazione carine, molto scorrevole nella lettura e con un licantropo molto alpha e decisamente interessante.

Maisie da parte sua non è certo la classica damigella in pericolo sprovveduta e svenevole. È una tipa tosta e questo la rende veramente eccezionale.

Presente sempre una sottile ironia nei dialoghi tra i due personaggi, che rende molto divertente i loro scambi di battute.

Mi è piaciuto molto anche l'epilogo di questo libro della serie e sono veramente curiosa di vedere come evolverà la storia e se verranno introdotte anche le altre creature tipo vampiri e fae in futuro.

First book of the series London Undead, which seems to be a very promising series, in which humans and werewolves are fighting with the threat created by zombies. The two species separately are looking for answers about the source of these creatures. The werewolves are immune to the infection and may be powerful allies for humans, but mistrust and prejudices between the two species make it impossible for an alliance. Vampires and fae keep themselves for now outside of everything, but in the future in the series I think they could change their minds.

Few people walk the streets of London since the zombie outbreak, but that's not an issue for Seth. As a werewolf, he can handle himself and save humans reckless enough to take a nighttime stroll. While on patrol he comes across a group of people under attack. The one woman brave enough to take a stand against the zombies catches his eye—and not just because of her way with a gun. Learning the beautiful woman is homeless and fends for herself only intensifies his urge to protect and care for her.
Maisie can't help but admit that she's attracted to her werewolf rescuer. She's drawn to Seth's strength and ferocity, and finds herself opening up to him in ways she never imagined, even though she's determined to not rely on Seth or anyone else. She doesn't want another person to get hurt—or die—for her sake. She has enough scars, physical and emotional, from the last time…
But when Seth realizes something is drawing the zombies to Maisie, there may be nothing he can do to save her…

The plot and the setting are very good, and the reading very fluent with an alpha werewolf definitely interesting and hot.
Maisie, for her part, is hardly the classic damsel in distress clueless . Is a badass chick and this makes her truly exceptional.
There is always a subtle irony in dialogues between the two characters, which makes it very entertaining their trade of beats.
I really liked the ending of this book and I am really curious to see how the story will evolve and if others creatures like vampire and fae will be introduced in the future.

Lo sceicco nel deserto ha sempre il suo fascino e la storia raccontata in questo libro è scritta veramente molto bene e i suoi personaggi entrambi caratterizzati molto bene.

Il destino della principessa del Tazkhan Layla la porta verso un matrimonio ordinato dal padre in punto di morte, ma questo per lei vorrebbe dire trascorrere tutta la sua vita in balia di un uomo crudele, che la priverebbe della sua libertà e dell'affetto della sorella. Questa prospettiva è per lei insostenibile e decide di scappare e chiedere aiuto allo Sceicco Raz Al Zakhi, il più acerrimo nemico del padre.

Raz in cambio della protezione che Layla sta cercando, rifugiandosi da lui, chiede solo una cosa: questo re errante nel deserto desidera che lei diventi la sua regina. La sua libertà sarà al sicuro, ma ora è a rischio il suo cuore, a causa della bruciante passione che nasce tra lei e lo sceicco. Infatti ci vorrà ben più del fuoco per disgelare la diffidenza del marito nei suoi confronti.

La trama non rende merito sicuramente al contenuto del libro, appare un po' troppo banale e soprattutto non rende l'idea di chi siano Layla e Raz, entrambi hanno un passato doloroso, che li ha segnati, senza però renderli indifferenti o insensibili.

Layla è una giovane donna intelligente, che tenta di lasciarsi guidare dalla razionalità, che l'ha sempre aiutata a superare le avversità nel suo passato, ma al tempo stesso nutre un profondo affetto per la sorella ed è disposta a fare di tutto e sfidare la sorte per cambiare il loro destino. Prende in mano le redini della sua vita e fa letteralmente un salto nel vuoto. È  consapevole dei rischi che corre nel presentarsi a Raz e contrariamente ad altri romance è lei a fare la proposta "indecente" all'uomo che odia la sua famiglia.

Raz è un personaggio maschile molto intenso nei suoi sentimenti, un lottatore, ma anche un protettore, anche nei confronti di Layla, mette da parte i suoi pregiudizi e cerca di scoprire la verità su questa donna che ha sempre odiato, a causa delle sue origini. È sorpreso dalla sua intraprendenza e dal suo coraggio e le concede il beneficio del dubbio, nonostante facendo così, per riconquistare il Paese di cui era il legittimo leader e da cui era dovuto scappare, metta a rischio la persona più importante della sua vita.

Una storia molto bella, non banale e al tempo stesso che si legge in un baleno, trascinati dal desiderio di conoscere il futuro di Layla e Raz.

Devo aggiungere che spero non sia un libro unico, ma che la scrittrice decida di sviluppare  una possibile storia tra Yasmin, sorella di Layla e Salem fratello di Raz, dei quali leggiamo si legge un breve accenno nella trama del libro.

The Sheikh in the desert has always his charm and the story told in this book is very well written and both the characters  are characterised very well.

"Walking into the lion's den unprotected, Princess?" For Layla, princess of Tazkhan, her arranged marriage means one thing—a lifetime of cruelty and captivity. Such an unendurable prospect drives her to throw herself at the mercy of Sheikh Raz Al Zahki—her family's greatest enemy!

Raz demands one thing in return for the safe haven Layla is seeking—this brooding desert king wants to make her his queen! Her freedom might be secured, but now her heart is at risk, for soon she's lost to the scorching heat of their marriage bed. However, it will take more than fire to thaw her guarded husband.

The plot does not  give merit surely on the contents of the book, it looks a bit too trivial and especially doesn't give the idea of who are Layla and Raz, they both have a painful past, which marked them, but also doesn't make them indifferent or insensitive.

Layla is an intelligent young woman, trying to be guided by her rationality, that has always helped her to overcome adversity he past, but at the same time nourishes a deep affection for her sister and she is willing to do everything and challenge her luck to change their fate.She takes over the reins of her life and she literally takes a leap into the void. She is aware of the risks that she runs in introduce yourself to Raz and unlike other romance she is Layla the person who makes the proposal "indecent" to the man who hates her family.

Raz is a male character very intense in his feelings, a fighter, but also a protector, even with Layla, he puts aside his prejudices and tries to discover the truth about this woman he has always hated, because of her origins. He is surprised by her resourcefulness and her courage and he gives her the benefit of the doubt, despite doing so, he can to regain the country of which he was the legitimate leader and from he has to escape, but he also put at risk the most important person in his life.

A very nice story, non-trivial and at the same time that it reads in a heartbeat, driven by the desire to know the future of Layla and Raz.

I must add that I hope is not a single book, but that the writer decides to develop a possible history of Yasmin, Layla's sister and Salem brother of Raz, of whom we read a brief reference in the plot of the book.
