ANTEPRIMA: Fugitive by Shirlee McCoy

Libro autoconclusivo della serie Love Inspired Suspense.

Non che di suspense ne abbia trovata molta, se devo dire.

Laney Jefferson è una giovane vedova, unica beneficiaria dell'eredità del padre, un'antica tenuta con relativi terreni, ai limiti della cittadina dove ha trascorso la sua infanzia e luogo dal quale è fuggita durante l'adolescenza. La donna decide di mettere ordine nella sua vita, controllare la casa per poi venderla e ricominciare una nuova vita.

Durante una tormenta di neve, mentre trascorre il weekend in una cabina isolata di proprietà del marito deceduto, si presenta alla sua porta un uomo, ricercato dalla polizia, con indosso ancora manette e divisa del carcere. In un primo momento è terrorizzata, ma guardandolo meglio si accorge che l'uomo non è uno sconosciuto, ma è Logan Randal, lo stesso ragazzo adottato dalla sua famiglia, che in passato l'ha aiutata a sfuggire dalla sua terribile realtà. L'uomo si proclama innocente: qualcuno ha ordito un complotto contro di lui per incriminarlo e ha anche tentato di ucciderlo.

Laney non può fare a meno di credergli e farsi coinvolgere dagli eventi, e dai sentimenti che scopre di nutrire per quest'uomo che proviene dal suo passato, mentre insieme tenteranno di scoprire la verità per scagionarlo.

Il libro si legge bene, è scorrevole, ma per rientrare nella categoria suspance si doveva sviluppare con una trama un po' più complessa.

Invece si è concentrata più nel rievocare il passato dei due personaggi, per far comprendere i motivi del legame così profondo che li unisce, anche dopo così tanti anni e durante questo loro percorso, in cui si accorgono di quello che provano l'uno per l'altra, si svolgono le indagini per scoprire chi vuole rovinare la vita di Logan.

In questa loro avventura vengono aiutati da altre persone convinte dell'innocenza dell'uomo e che vengono assunte per proteggerlo dal suo nemico.

Tra i personaggi secondari mi è piaciuto molto Stan, il patrigno di Laney, che si aggrega al gruppo, un anziano ex poliziotto che li vuole aiutare.

Allo stesso tempo Stan mi ha lasciato un po' perplessa, prima si fa abbindolare dalle bugie di Mildred, la madre di Laney, poi scoperta la verità comune rimane con lei, per poi decidere di fuggire e collaborare con un gruppo di persone che non ha mai visto in vita sua... Un po' strano.

Ho pensato, poi, che tutto si potesse ricollegare alla profonda impronta cristiana che hanno i personaggi di questo libro. Nella loro giustificazione del destino secondo il volere di Dio, nel modo di affrontare colpa e mantenere la loro fede nonostante le avversità.

Comunque rispetto a quello che mi aspettavo dalla sinossi, un po' sono rimasta delusa.

If I must say I didn't find so much of suspense.

Laney Jefferson is a young widow, she's just received her father's heritage, an ancient mansion with its lands, to the limits of the town where She spent her childhood and the place from which she run from her adolescence. The woman decides to put order in her life, check out the house and then sell it and start a new life.

During a snowstorm, while she is spending the weekend in an isolated cabin owned by the deceased husband, a man shows up at her door, he 's a police's fugitive, still wearing handcuffs and prison uniforms. At first she is terrified, but watching him better she realizes that the man is not a stranger, but he's Logan Randal, the same boy,adopted by her family, who helped her escape from her terrible reality. The man proclaims himself innocent: someone has hatched a plot against him and he even tried to kill him.

Laney believes him and she gets involved by events, and by feelings that she discovers to feel for this man who comes from her past, while together they try to find the truth for exonerating evidence.

The book is o good reading, but I think that to fit in the category of suspense it had to develop with a more complex plot.

Instead it is focused more on the events of the past of the two characters, in order to understand the reasons for the deep bond that unites them, even after so many years and during this path, where they realize their true feelings for each other, during the investigation to find out who wants to ruin the Logan's life.

In this adventure they are aided by other people convinced of the innocence of the man and who are hired to protect him from his enemy.

Among the secondary characters I enjoyed Stan, the stepfather of Laney, who joins the group, a former senior policeman who wants to help them.

At the same time Stan left me a little puzzled, before he is tricked by the lies of Laney's mother, Mildred, then he discovered the truth and he stays with her, and then decide to escape and collaborate with a group of people that he has never seen in his life ... A bit strange.

I thought then that everything could be reconnect to the deep Christian imprint that the characters have in this book.: their jjustification of fate according to God's will, the way to deal with guilt and keep their faith despite adversity.

However, compared to what I expected from the synopsis, I am a little disappointed by the book.

Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian

In tempi non sospetti, primi di giugno 2012 alla Loveletter Convention di Berlino, Lara Adrian aveva annunciato che nel suo nuovo libro della Midnight Breed Series ci sarebbero stati cambiamenti importanti e sconvolgenti per quanto riguardava la sua amata serie. Non posso dire che non ci aveva avvisati, ma non avrei mai pensato che avesse il coraggio di osare così tanto.

In Edge of Dawn ci troviamo di fronte a un salto nella linea temporale di ben 20 anni, rispetto al libro precedente e, come introduce il prologo, ci troviamo di fronte ad un "prima" e un "dopo" rispetto ai fatti raccontati al termine di Darker After Midnight.

Per assorbire lo shock di questo cambiamento ho deciso i considerare questo libro come uno spin off della precedente serie della Adrian e ripartire anch'io da qui, senza troppi paragoni.

Questo è il libro dedicato alla storia tra Mira, compagna della stirpe o breedmate, e Kellan. Li avevamo lasciati adolescenti, già si intuiva la profondità del loro rapporto e dopo tutto questo tempo li ritroviamo cresciuti, ad affrontare eventi incredibili che sconvolgono la loro vita e li separano.

Negli anni successivi alla notte della tragedia, in cui Dragos rivela la presenza dei vampiri al mondo degli umani nel modo più terribile, attraverso una vera e propria carneficina, l'equilibrio esistente tra la convivenza delle due razze è fortemente compromesso. L'odio e la paura degli umani nei confronti dei Breed rischia di sfociare in una vera e propria guerra e Lucan e i guerrieri del suo Ordine sono gli unici che possano tentare di ricucire i rapporti per evitare il disastro.

Mira in questi anni, grazie a un severo addestramento è diventata il capitano di uno dei gruppi di guerrieri. Da sempre innamorata di Kellan riesce finalmente ad abbattere le difese del vampiro e a cominciare a costruire il loro rapporto come coppia, dopo aver trascorso insieme la loro prima notte, però, il ragazzo scompare improvvisamente. Durante una missione, a causa di un esplosione in cui rimane coinvolto, non viene più ritrovato il suo corpo e tutti lo credono morto.

Per otto anni Kellan è rimasto nascosto agli occhi dell'Ordine e si è unito ai ribelli, ma il destino ha deciso diversamente, durante il rapimento di un ostaggio da parte di ribelli viene catturata anche Mira, che si trova davanti alla verità: Kellan è vivo e in tutti questi anni ha lavorato col suo nemico, tradendo lei e l'Ordine, mettendo a rischio la pace che Lucan sta tentando di preservare in tutti i modi.

La storia tra Mira e Kellan è a dir poco sorprendente per i suoi alti e bassi, cosa che non mi aspettavo, visto che i due si conoscevano sin dall'infanzia e sono provenienti dallo stesso mondo. Lui commette continui errori e scelte discutibili, lei soffre, si arrabbia ma non può fare a meno di perdonarlo; una storia a dir poco tormentata, dolce amara, che però alla fine mi è piaciuta.

Quello che mi ha stupito veramente nel libro è stato trovare un sacco di personaggi nuovi, quasi tutti figli delle  coppie dell'Ordine. Li avevamo lasciati che uno di loro era appena nato, il figlio di Dante e Tess, gli altri erano "in arrivo" e invece me li ritrovo, qui, grandi e grossi, che vanno per nightclub o di pattuglia.

Avrei preferito un cambiamento più graduale, vederli magari crescere e godermi i vecchi buon Tegan, Lucan, Dante etc... in versione babbo. In questo libro tutto il vecchio gruppo di guerrieri è smembrato, ognuno ha un suo compito in diverse parti del mondo, in altre basi e in questo racconto hanno una parte un po' marginale, di contorno, a parte forse Lucan. Ecco perché la considero una nuova serie.

Pian piano dovremo conoscere questi nuovi Breed e sperare che abbiano la stoffa dei loro padri.

Per il prossimo libro mi aspetto sia su Nathan, visto qualche input qua e la' della Adrian. Chissà...

Last year in Berlin, during the Loveletter Convention, Lara Adrian announced that in her new book of the Midnight Breed Series there would be big change. I can't say that she hadn't warned us, but I never thought she had the courage to dare so much.

In Edge of Dawn we find ourselves 20 years after in the timeline with the previous book and as the prologue introduces us, we find ourselves faced with a" before "and" after "with the events we read in Darker After Midnight.

To absorb the shock of this change I decided that I consider this book as a spin off of the previous series  and I want to reset everything as a new start.

This the book is dedicated to the story between Mira, breedmate, and Kellan. We left them adolescents, they had already deep feelings for each other and after all this time we can see them facing incredible events that change their lives and separate them.

In the years following the night of the tragedy, in which Dragos reveals the presence of vampires in the human world  in the most terrible way, through a real carnage, the existing balance between the coexistence of the two races is strongly compromised. Humans hate and fear the Breed and the real danger is a war between the different race. Lucan and the Order's Warriors are the only ones who can try to mend the relations.

During these years, thanks to a strict training Mira becomes the captain of one of the warriors' groups. She always was in love with Kellan and finally she's able to break down his defenses  and start building their relationship as a couple, but after spending their first night together the boy disappears suddenly. During a mission, due to an explosion in which remains involved, the Orderare didn't find his body and everyone believed him dead.

For eight years Kellan stayed hidden  in the eyes of the Order and he joined the rebels, but fate decided otherwise, during the kidnapping of a hostage by rebels is captured even Mira, she discovers the truth: Kellan  is alive and in all these years he has been working with her enemy, betraying her and the Order, endangering the peace that Lucan is attempting to preserve in every way.

The story between Mira and Kellan is amazing for its ups and downs, which I wasn't expecting since the two knew each other from childhood and they are from the same world. He commits repeated errors and questionable choices, she suffers, gets angry but she always  forgive him, a very troubled story to, bitter  and sweet, but in the end I liked it.

What really amazed me was finding a lot of new characters, nearly all children of other couples. In the previous book one of them was newborn, Dante's son and Tess, the others were "arriving" and I founf them , in this book,  as big boys, and they are going to nightclubs or on patrol.

I would have preferred a more gradual change, see them maybe grow and enjoy the good old Tegan, Lucan, Dante etc. .. as daddy. In this book all the old group it is dismembered, each warrior has his own task in different parts of the world, in other bases and here they have a slightly marginal part in the tale, apart from maybe Lucan. That's why I consider this a new series.

Slowly we'll  learn about these new Breeds and hope they will be as good as theirs fathers.

For the next book I think is about Nathan, I saw some input here and there from Lara Adrian. Who knows ...

Koishi by Annie Nicholas

Koishi è stata una delle letture più carine e divertenti che abbia fatto ultimamente. La Nicholas con questo libro è andata un po' al di fuori dei soliti schemi dei paranormal fantasy, il suo dragone ha un senso dell'umorismo un po' particolare e alcune sue battute e comportamenti, per noi umani potrebbero sembrare politicamente scorretti, ma in realtà non mi hanno fato fare un sacco di risate.

Primo libro della serie GateKeepers, in Koishi viene raccontata la storia di Ishi, un antico e potente dragone, la cui vita è legata a doppio filo al suo compito di guardiano di un cancello che collega diverse dimensioni e diversi mondi. Deve controllare che attraverso il portale non facciano il loro ingresso creature pericolose quali nani, troll, orchi che possono tentare di depredare il suo mondo ricco di magia e tesori. La vita di Ishi è solitaria e totalmente votata al suo compito, gli umani del suo stesso mondo lo temono, motivo per il quale interagisce con loro attraverso sembianze umane, spacciandosi per Koishi, un dipendente del drago; il rapporto tra creature della sua stessa razza sono difficili da mantenere, anche quello con la sua stessa madre. 

All'improvviso compare nella sua isola una donna americana, Sandra, che si è addentrata nel mondo magico per ottenere dal drago un oggetto magico, un saji, che sarebbe in grado di salvare la vita della sorella gravemente malata. La donna e' disposta a tutto per ottenere il saji, anche a fare un accordo con il drago che tutti temono.

Ishi rimane intrigato e divertito dalla personalità di Sandra e dal suo coraggio, e dopo tanto tempo trova una persona in grado di allietare le sue lunghe giornate. Grazie alle sembianze di Koishi la avvicina trascorrendo del tempo con lei per scoprire il motivo che la spinge a cercare il dragone.

Ben presto Sandra scopre la verità e viene catapultata nella realtà soprannaturale della vita di Ishi rimanendone affascinata, ma la sua priorità è portare a termine la una missione e tornare nel suo mondo, anche se si rende conto il suo cuore è sull'isola insieme a quella creatura straordinaria.

Il racconto di questa storia è veramente piacevole da leggere, creature fantasy, azione, ironia e hot sex mischiati insieme, che garantiscono di poter trascorrere una bella serata. Un buon inizio per una serie che spero che conserverà queste premesse se non addirittura migliorare.

Koishi was one of the nicest  and funny readings I have done lately. This book by Annie Nicholas it is a little outside the usual patterns of paranormal fantasy, her dragon has a peculiar sense of humor and some of his jokes and behaviours, for us humans might seem politically incorrect, but actually they me laugh a lot.

This is the first book in the GateKeepers Series, Koishi is about the story of Ishi, an ancient and powerful dragon, whose life is tied to be the guardian of a gate that connects different worlds. He Must check that through the portal can't pass dangerous creatures such as dwarfs, trolls, orcs that may try to prey on his world full of magic and treasures. Ishi's life is lonely and totally devoted to his task, the humans his same world fear him, reason for which he interacts with them through human form pretending to be Koishi, an employee of the Dragon; the relationship between creatures of his same breed are hard to maintain, even the one with his own mother.

Suddenly it appears in his island an American woman, Sandra, she came in this magical world to get something from the Dragon, a saji, the magical treasure would be able to save her seriously ill sister's life. The woman is willing to do anything to get the saji, even to make a deal with the dragon that everyone fears.

Ishi remains intrigued and amused by the personality of Sandra and her courage, and after a long time a person can bring funny and beauty in his long days and thanks being Koishi he can spend time with her to find out what drives her to seek the Dragon.

Sandra soon discovers the truth and is catapulted into the supernatural reality of Ishi's life of Ishi and she's fascinated, but reality forces her to accomplish the mission and get back into her own world, although her heart remained on the island.

This story is really enjoyable to read, with fantasy creatures, humor, acton and hot sex  mixed together, a nice evening is guaranteed. A good start for a new series that I hope will keep these premises or even improve them.

Il Diario di Isabel di Isabel C. Alley

"Stai leggendo in italiano?!" Affermazione stupita, più che giusta del mio compagno, visto che negli ultimi anni raramente leggo libri in italiano, a dire il vero mi rifiuto oramai di leggere traduzioni dall'inglese, ma sono stata molto incuriosita dal passaparola su questo libro ed essendo l'autrice italiana non potevo certo aspettarmi di trovarlo in inglese...

La storia, in modo molto azzeccato secondo me, è scritta sotto forma di un diario più o meno giornaliero, in cui la protagonista racconta se stessa e quello che le sta succedendo in un momento particolare della sua vita.

E' stata una scelta inusuale, ma estremamente efficace, visto che ci troviamo di fronte ai pensieri e alle emozioni di una giovane ragazza universitaria. Lo stile di scrittura è brillante, pieno di ritmo e il linguaggio appropriato per l'età della protagonista e per l'intensità delle emozioni che Isabel si trova a vivere e che riesce a sfogare solo attraverso ciò che scrive. 

Isabel è una ragazza con una vita tranquilla e normale, convive con un'amica, frequenta l'università, ha un fidanzato, che purtroppo per motivi legati allo studio, vive lontano, tutto nella norma fino a quando nella sua vita entra prepotentemente Andrea, un compagno di università, che in realtà è un mezzo vampiro. Tra di loro si instaura un rapporto tormentato, quasi un ossessione per Isabel, travolta dall'intensità e dalla passione che il ragazzo riesce a suscitare in lei. Andrea però non è il classico vampiro romantico di cui siamo abituati a leggere ultimamente, è una creatura crudele, un po' perversa, che utilizza i suoi poteri per controllare e quasi dominare la ragazza.

Solo una tragedia, la morte di Susy, l'amica e coinquilina di Isabel riuscirà a interrompere questo legame, Andrea è costretto ad andarsene e Isabel spinta dal senso di colpa per ciò che è successo, e dal desiderio di vendicarsi di Andrea, entra in un gruppo di cacciatori di vampiri per poter imparare a difendersi, ma soprattutto per dare la caccia a lui e ai suoi simili.

Il suo tutor sarà Stephan, un giovane di cui ben presto Isabel si innamora. La loro storia sarà tutt'altro che semplice, ricca di incomprensioni e segreti che fanno soffrire entrambi.

Se posso dire, non è un libro facile da digerire, niente va come ci si aspetta. Andrea è un personaggio che bisognerebbe odiare, invece si rimane ammaliati dal suo fascino perverso. Stephan e Isabel sono imperfetti, pieni di difetti come le persone reali, compiono errori, ne pagano le conseguenze, eccome se le pagano, e ci trascinano nel vortice della loro storia. 

Isabel si mette sempre troppo in gioco, anima corpo ma soprattutto cuore, soffre e fa soffrire. Stephan non è l'eroe senza macchia sicuro di sé, che prende sempre la decisione giusta al momento giusto.

E questo è il motivo per cui ci si lascia coinvolgere dalla loro storia, in cui niente va come ti aspetti, nemmeno il finale e di cui spero di leggere presto la prosecuzione.

Mi piacerebbe di trovarmi di fronte a due personaggi cresciuti e cambiati dalle loro esperienze e dai loro errori, dei giovani diventati degli adulti a causa delle loro scelte.

Due ultime cose: primo finalmente un romanzo,con protagonisti giovani, che non è uno Young Adult, non se ne poteva più della visione da educande di alcune serie in giro ultimamente, anche perché non credo che i nostri cari adolescenti e giovani siano così puritani; secondo un libro autopubblicato da un autore con una scelta molto intelligente: pubblicazione cartacea, con un prezzo adeguato ai costi di pubblicazione, e formato Ebook a un prezzo di assoluto interesse: 1,99€. Scelta molto, molto intelligente.

The Convict's Bounty Bride by Lena Dowling

Quattro stelle a questo racconto breve, che mi è piaciuto tantissimo. Perché solo un rating di quattro? Perché con dei personaggi così belli e divertenti avrei preferito un romanzo vero e proprio, con una trama più ricca e articolata, la sua brevità mi ha lasciato un po' dispiaciuta.

La bravura della scrittrice è stata nel riuscire a entrare subito nel vivo della storia, e avendo poche pagine a disposizione è stata una cosa fondamentale per l'evolversi del racconto.

Thea Willers è la giovane figlia di un conte, che tenta in tutti i modi di sfuggire all'hobby principale della madre, organizzarle un bel matrimonio con qualche pretendente papabile per la sua posizione sociale. La ragazza che è cresciuta con una certa libertà e, grazie al volere del padre, ha potuto studiare in modo approfondito, cosa inconsueta per le donne dell'epoca, ha una mente sveglia e brillante e ha in mente dei progetti importanti per la sua vita: poter fare una carriera, scrivere e soprattutto non avere un marito che limiti la libertà, che è sempre stata abituata ad avere. Questo però va contro il volere dei genitori e non riceve nessun sostegno dal fratello, troppo impegnato a perdersi nei paradisi artificiali che gli regala il laudano.

James Hunter è appena rientrato dall'Australia, nuova colonia dell'Inghilterra dove ha scontato una pena di sette anni di lavori forzati, a causa di una truffa che in realtà non ha commesso. L'uomo si è incolpato del fatto per salvare la sua famiglia dalla rovina, preferisce infangare la sua reputazione in cambio di soldi che potrebbero risolvere i problemi economici della famiglia, ma ha anche un altro piano, per riguadagnare l'ingresso nella buona società, dove i soldi non bastano, conclude un accordo col padre del vero colpevole: quando tornerà dalla colonia avrà il diritto di sposare la figlia del conte Willers, la nostra cara Thea.

La trappola per la nostra eroina sembra scattata, ma in realtà James Hunter si dimostra molto diverso da tutti gli uomini che ha conosciuto e la ragazza, nonostante in un primo momento si opponga all'unione, in seguito comincia a pensare che qualche lato positivo ci possa essere nello sposare quell'uomo così affascinante e non convenzionale.

Thea è un personaggio divertente, con una mente molto intelligente e furba, ne studia di tutti i colori per potersi liberare dai progetti della madre, ho ammirato molto anche la sua testardaggine e coraggio.

James è l'uomo ideale per un romance di questo tipo, bello e dannato, ma al tempo stesso estremamente intelligente, con un comportamento insolito rispetto a quello che ci si potrebbe aspettare da un gentiluomo, ma al tempo stesso orgoglioso e leale.

Una bella coppia veramente, che avrebbe potuto dare origine a uno splendido romanzo, peccato, comunque mi sono gustata e divertita con questa lettura così veloce, ne è valsa la pena. 

Quindi libro di prossima uscita (1 marzo) consigliatissimo per gli amanti del genere.

Four stars for this short novel, I liked it a lot. Why only a rating of four? Because the characters are so beautiful and funny that I would have preferred a real novel with a richer and more complex plot, the thing was so short left me a little disappointed.
With her skill  the writer was in being able to get shortly right to the heart of the story, and this is a very important thing in a short novel.
Thea Willers is the young daughter of an Earl, she tries in every way to escape to her mother's main hobby: organize a beautiful wedding with some suitable men  for her social position. The girl who she grew up with a certain freedom and, thanks to the her father's will, she has been able to study, something unusual for women at that time, she has a sharp mind and she has very brilliant and important projects in mind for her life: she wants a career, writing and she especially doesn't want to be wed with a husband that restricts her freedom that she's always been accustomed to having. This, however, goes against her parents' wishes  and she receives no support from her brother, who is too busy getting lost in artificial paradises that the laudanum gives him.
James Hunter is just returned from Australia, new colony of England where he spent a the last seven years as a convict, as a result of a scam which actually he didn't commit. The man himself  to save his family from ruin, he prefers to ruin his reputation in exchange for money that could solve his family's economic problems, but he also has another plan, in order to regain entry into polite society, where money is not enough, he makes an agreement with the parent of the real culprit: when he will return from the colony he will have the right to marry the Earl's daughter, our dear Thea.
The trap for our heroine seems to have taken, but in fact James Hunter proves to be a very different from all the men the girl knew and although at first she objected to the Union, then she begins to think there are some enjoyful points in the marriage this man so charming and unconventional.
Thea is a funny character, with a very clever mind, she's smart , and she studies all sorts of thing to free herself  from mother's projects, I admired a lot even her stubbornness and courage.
James is the ideal man for a romance, beautiful and damned, but at the same time extremely intelligent, with his unusual behavior compared to what you might expect from a gentleman, but at the same time he's proud and loyal.
A really nice couple, a real novel with them it could be so beautiful, however I enjoyed and had fun with this reading, it's worth it.
I reccomend the forthcoming book (March 1) to people in love with this kind of book.

Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

Libro decisamente non per tutti, a causa dei contenuti sessuali piuttosto espliciti, tra cui sono presenti momenti BDSM. Diciamo che chi ha trovato scandalosa le famose 50 sfumature e' meglio che giri alla larga da questa lettura, chi invece ha pensato che Christian Grey fosse un principiante, qui potrebbe trovare dei maschietti alpha di suo gradimento.

E' un romanzo di genere distopico erotico e sinceramente in questo momento dove e' molto di moda questo tipo di ambientazione, non l'avevo mi vista applicata alla letteratura erotica.

Il mondo è cambiato in modo profondo dopo una tempesta solare, la città in cui ci troviamo è divisa in settori, controllati da gang per quanto riguarda il potere e gli affari, non sono ammessi segni di debolezza e cedimento e si è sempre sull'orlo di guerre tra bande rivali. E poi c'è Eden, dietro un bel cancello, controllato da guardie e sistemi di sicurezza, vivono i politici, i ricchi, chi è influente e Noelle è nata qui. Figlia di un uomo molto importante, la sua vita ed educazione hanno lo scopo di trasformarla nella perfetta moglie ideale invisibile per uomini di alto rango, di cui però dovrebbe diventare la spia perfetta, per fornire al padre i segreti necessari a detenere il potere, anche grazie al ricatto. La ragazza però vuole di più, non si ritrova in questo modo di vivere freddo e opportunista, trasgredisce le regole perché vuole provare emozioni e capire chi è veramente, ma per questo vine punita e cacciata da Eden, abbandonata al suo destino in uno dei settori più a rischio della città, il settore quattro.

Qui si imbatte in Jasper braccio destro del capo della gang degli O'Kane, il giovane la salva dal pericolo e la introduce nel suo mondo. Una realtà in cui far parte degli O'Kane vuol dire mostrare la massima lealtà per la gang e i suoi componenti, e ricevere in cambio protezione e lealtà. Per Noelle questa nuova vita èspaventosa, ma emozionante, si rende conto di volerne fare parte per vivere come ha sempre sognato, esplorando limiti impensabili. Sesso e violenza sono parti fondamentali della vita degli O'Kane e diventano la nuova realtà in cui Noelle vuole vivere, per stare insieme a Jasper.

Il mondo dei vari settori e le conseguenze causate dalla tempesta solare vengono raccontate come un dato di fatto, senza spiegazioni particolari su quello che è successo e ha creato questa situazione. Il libro è più concentrato a mostrare e far comprendere i meccanismi presenti all'interno della gang, fra i suoi componenti. Gli uomini sono molto dominanti, ma nello stesso tempo rispettano le donne componenti della gang che hanno completo diritto di scelta su quello che vogliono o non vogliono fare, portare il tatuaggio degli O'Kane è una forma di potere e protezione. Quando poi una coppia decide di fare sul serio, mostra i segni fisici di questa scelta. Un po' un concetto da uomo delle caverne, ma in fondo è quello che di solito attira in questi tipi di bad guy.

La storia di Noelle e Jasper non è semplice, ma a me è piaciuta, anche se devo dire che i veri pezzi da novanta sono Dallas e Lex (prossimo libro in uscita della serie Beyond, a Marzo). Anche gli altri personaggi secondari come Ace e Rachel sono molto interessanti e formano un bel gruppo.

Come ho detto deve piacere il genere, altrimenti in alcune scene può apparire pesante per i suoi contenuti e se devo dire la verità più che distopico a tratti mi sembrava di vedere scritta la storia di una di quelle bande latino-americane che si vedono nei film ambientati a Miami.

The book definitely not for everyone, there are very explicit sexual content, including BDSM scenes. We can say that those people who found scandalous the famous "50 shades of..."  turn away from this reading, those who thought that Christian Grey was a rookie in BDSM,  here might find some alpha males of their liking.

It is a dystopian erotic novel  and right now where it is very fashionable this type of setting, that I never have seen applied to erotic literature.

The world has changed so deep after a solar storm, the city in which we find ourselves is divided into sectors controlled by the gang for the power and business, no signs of weakness and failure are allowed and it's always on the verge of wars between rival gangs. And then there's Eden, behind beautiful gate and walls, controlled by guards and security systems. It's the place where politicians, wealthy people, councilmen live and Noelle was born here. She's a councilman's daughter, a powerful man, her life and education are meant to transform her in a perfect ideal and invisible wife for a high rank man, the true is she should become the perfect spy, to provide his father the secrets needed to hold power, partly thanks to blackmail. The girl, however, wants more, she thinks this way of life is cold and opportunistic, she goes againts the rules because she wants to try and figure out who she really is, what she can feel, but for her behavior she is punished and expelled from Eden, abandoned to her own fate in one of the most dangerous sector, the four sector.

Here she meets Jasper the right arm of  the O'Kane gang leader, the man saves her from danger and introduces her in his world. A reality where to be part of O'Kane means show the utmost loyalty to the gang and its components, and receive in exchange  protection and loyalty too. For Noelle this new life is scary, but exciting, she realizes she wants join this kind of life, she always dreamed of exploring unthinkable limits. Sex and violence are normal parts of O'Kane gang lifestyle and become her new reality in which Noelle wants to live with Jasper.

The world of the various sectors and the consequences caused by solar storm are told as a matter of fact, without specific explanations about what happened and what has created this situation. The book is more concentrated to show and to understand the mechanisms that exist within the gang, among its components. Men are very dominant, but at the same time they respect the gang women members The girls have the power of the choice on what they want do or not want to do, bring the tattoo of O'Kane is a form of power and protection. When a couple decides to get serious, shows fisical marks of this bound and it's sacred. A caveman's concept, but basically it's what usually attracts people to these types of bad guy.

The story of Noelle and Jasper is not simple, but I liked it, although I must say I loved the most Dallas, the leader of the gang, and Lex (next book in the series Beyond in about them! It will be realeased in March). The other secondary characters as Ace and Rachel are very interesting and they form a group very hot. Some scenes may seem rough and hard for their contents but they remind me the story of those Latin American bands that you can see in movies set in Miami, not so dystopian?!

A volte mi e' più difficile parlare dei libri che mi sono piaciuti molto, come questo e che scatenano tante emozioni e pensieri che non si riescono a comunicare del tutto agli altri. Meraviglioso, emozionante ma soprattutto vero, ecco come lo potrei definire in poche parole.

The Sleeping Night racconta la storia di uno di quegli amori, tra due persone, di cui tutti sognano e che solo le grosse difficoltà e le battaglie compiute per combattere per il diritto di provare questi sentimenti sanno forgiare.

Angel e Isaiah sono cresciuti insieme da sempre, grazie al legame che ha unito i loro padri, reduci entrambi dalla prima guerra mondiale, ma i due ragazzi sono nati e cresciuti nel posto sbagliato, Gideon Texas, sud degli Stati Uniti d'America, nel momento sbagliato, la prima meta' nel 1900; per una bambina bianca e un bambino nero, sono i tempi in cui e' ancora presente la segregazione razziale, tempi in cui l'amicizia tra due bambini di genitori di razze diverse può essere tollerata a fatica, e col trascorrere degli anni e l'arrivo dell'adolescenza diventa un vero e proprio taboo. Angel e' stata allevata dal padre, dopo la morte della madre, le ha insegnato valori quali il rispetto, l'uguaglianza, la libertà. Nella comunità di Gideon per questo sono sempre stati un po' isolati, il negozio che possiedono serve per la maggioranza clienti della zona sud della cittadina, dove vive la popolazione di colore.

Ben presto il padre di lei si accorge dei sentimenti che nascono tra Isaiah e la figlia; il padre di Isaiah e' già stato ucciso a causa del suo tentativo di rivendicare dei diritti sacrosanti per le persone di colore, e il padre di Angel, che ama il ragazzo come un figlio, si rende conto dei pericoli che correrebbe il giovane se altri si accorgessero dei suoi sentimenti e lo convince a partire per il fronte della seconda guerra mondiale. Durante la guerra Angel e Isaiah rimangono in contatto; quelle lettere sono una delle poche cose che possano aiutare il giovane ad affrontare gli orrori della guerra e una volta tornato dal fronte si accorge che nulla e' cambiato. Gideon e' sempre la stessa, le sue regole e pregiudizi sono rimasti, così come il pericolo che può nascere dall'amore che sia Angel che Isaiah tentato di nascondere l'un l'altro.

Un libro, una storia d'amore, ma non solo... La realtà di quel periodo in cui erano in vigore le leggi di segregazione razziale, le lettere dal fronte della guerra, ma anche i pregiudizi nei confronti di una donna che desidera vivere a modo sua la vita, senza per forza essere la moglie di... Tutto questo insieme ha dato vita a un racconto unico e stupendo. Sia personaggi i principali che quelli secondari sono importanti per creare il quadro d'insieme della storia, facendo immergere chi legge in un mondo che si può quasi tastare con mano.

E se posso dire i segni di quel periodo storico ci sono ancora, più subdoli e striscianti, ma il razzismo non e' stato cancellato, da nessuna parte.

Sometimes it's more difficult to talk about the books I liked a lot, just as The Sleeping Night,  it triggers so many emotions and thoughts that you are not sure to be able to communicate that to all tothers. Wonderful, amazing but mostly true, here's how it might define in a few words.

The Sleeping Night tells the story of one kind of love between two people that everyone dreams about and that only great difficulty and fights are able to forge, for the right to have these feelings.

Angel and Isaiah have grown together ever since, thanks to the tie that joined their fathers, both veterans from World War I, but the two boys were born and raised, the wrong place, Gideon Texas, South of the United States of America, and the wrong time, the first half in 1900, for a white girl and a black child, are the days when it still exists racial segregation, a time when the friendship between two children of parents of different races can be tolerated, and over the years with the arrival of adolescence it becomes a taboo. Angel and was raised by his father after her mother death, he taught her  things as respect , equality, freedom. In the community of Gideon for this life's vision they were a little outcasted, their shop serves is a place for most customers a town's area  where the black population live.

Soon Angel's father finds out the feelings of love between Isaiah and his daughter; Isaiah's  father has already been killed because of his attempt to claim  rights for black people, and Angel's father, who loves the boy as a son, realizes the dangers that would run for the youngman  if others people are unaware of his feelings and he tries to coax him to leave for the front lines of World War II. During the war Angel and Isaiah remain in touch, those letters are one of the few things that can help the boy to face the horrors of war and once he returned from the war he discovers that nothing is changed. Gideon is always the same, its rules and prejudices remain, as well as the danger that may arise from the love that Angel and Isaiah tried to hide from each other.

It isn't only a book, a love story ... The reality of that time, the racial segregation laws, the letters from the front of the war, but also prejudice against a woman who wants to live her life, without necessarily being the wife of ... All this together has given the rise to a unique and beautiful tale. Both the main characters and the secondary's one are important to create the whole picture of the story, the reader can almost feel this world with his hands.

And if I can say the signs of that historical period still exist, more devious and crawling, but racism has not been erased, anywhere.

Hero of my Heart by Megan Frampton

Hero of my Heart è un historical romance carino e di facile lettura, ambientato tra l'Inghilterra e la Scozia. Si può vedere anche come il racconto romantico e appassionato del viaggio di una coppia che affronta diversi imprevisti sulla via del ritorno verso Londra, infatti la maggior parte della storia è ambientata durante questa fuga un po' rocambolesca.

Mary Smith è la giovane figlia di un vicario, che alla morte del padre, viene letteralmente offerta all'asta in una taverna al miglior offerente dal fratellastro, che ha bisogno di denaro per pagare degli ingenti debiti di gioco; la ragazza è stata drogata ed è del tutto inconsapevole del destino che l'aspettavo.

Alasdair Thornam è un gentiluomo presente per caso nella taverna, impegnato ad affondare i propri dispiaceri nell'alcol, ma quando si rende conto di quello che sta succedendo decide di acquistare la ragazza per salvarla, capendo di essere il rischio minore che le possa capitare. L'uomo, infatti, non si ritiene esattamente la migliore delle persone: ha una dipendenza per l'oppio e diversi problemi personali che lo spingono all'autodistruzione, ma pensa di poter riuscire a gestire la situazione fino al momento in cui accompagnerà la ragazza a Londra, per metterla al sicuro e farle cominciare una nuova vita.

Mary ben presto si accorge che l'uomo che l'ha salvata e si è offerto di sposarla per mantenere integra la sua  reputazione, ha dei grossi problemi, a sprazzi intravede l'uomo che è stato una volta e pensa di poterlo aiutare, durante il loro viaggio, a superare i problemi che lo affliggono, per poi separare le loro strade una volta arrivati a destinazione.

Il libro è stata una lettura piacevole, ma non mi ha convinto completamente in alcuni aspetti dei personaggi e della storia.

Alasdair è il classico esempio di eroe tormentato, ma la facilità con cui alterna il suo malessere legato all'astinenza da oppio a momenti di completa lucidità e performance da atleta, sia nel letto che per difendersi dagli imprevisti del viaggio verso Londra, è una visione un po' troppo ottimistica delle sue condizioni.

Mary, coraggiosa, tenace s spiritosa si adatta alla situazione, al matrimonio e alla passione che nutre per quest'uomo in modo un po' troppo veloce. Capisco che siano sposati, ma dalla figlia di un vicario, per quanto abbia fatto due chiacchiere con l'amica, non mi aspettavo certamente tanta disinvoltura. La conclusione del libro mi è sembrata un po' affrettata e semplice, diciamo che carne al fuoco ce n'era per rendere il tutto più intrigante.

Hero of my Heart it's a historical romance cute and easy-to-read, set between England and Scotland. You can also see as a romantic and passionate tale of a couple  on the way back to London, in fact most of the story is set during an escape with a bit of adventure.
Mary Smith is the vicar's young daughter, who after his father's death, is literally offered at auction in a tavern to the highest bidder by his half-brother, who needs money to pay for the huge gambling debts; the girl was drugged and is totally unaware of the fate that can expected her.
Alasdair Thornam is a gentleman  in the tavern, lost in his sorrows while he drinks alcohol, but when he realizes what is going to happen he decides  to buy the girl and save her, realizing he's the lower risk. The man, in fact, is not exactly a good man: he has an addiction to opium and other personal problems that lead him  to self-destruction, but he thinks he can manage to handle the situation until he'll accompany the girl to London, to put her safe and let her start a new life.
Mary soon realizes that the man who saved and offered to marry her to keep her reputation intact, has big problems, the man shows glimpses of who he was once and she thinks she can help him, on their way to London , to overcome the problems that afflict him, then they can separate their paths once have arrived at their destination.
The book was a pleasant read, but I'm not convinced completely in some characters' aspects and by the story.
Alasdair is the classic example of a tormented hero, but the ease with which alternates his illness  opium withdrawal) linked to moments of total lucidity and full performance of hot sex and showing fisical power to defend against the trip's dangers  to London is a rather too optimistic vision of his condition.
Mary is courageous, tenacious, her spirit's adapts to the situation, but for a young and innocent girl it seems a little too fast to show such passion for a man, a stranger, yes he's gorgeus and I understand they're married, but by a vicar's daughter, who had only a chat with her friend about sex, I expected more shyness. The end of book  it seemed a bit too rushed and simple.

Forever Werewolf by Michele Hauf

La prima cosa da dire dei racconti contenuti in questo libro, perché in realtà sono due novelle, è che di due non ne fanno uno sano.

Si intuisce da questo che non mi è piaciuto molto il libro, ma parliamo separatamente dei due racconti.

FOREVER WEREWOLF: Alexis Conner è la principessa del branco Alpine, nonostante sia la figlia dell'alpha, vive una vita solitaria all'interno del branco a causa di un terribile segreto che le impedisce di poter essere un normale elemento del branco. Una bellissima principessa di ghiaccio, agli occhi di tutti. Trystan Hawke giunge al castello Wulfsiege per compiere una commissione della massima importanza, per conto del padre. Rimane bloccato sul posto a causa di una valanga e presta il suo aiuto per soccorrere componenti di un branco che non conosce e che sarebbero tutt'altro che amichevoli con lui se scoprissero le sue origini: il ragazzo infatti è per metà lupo e per metà vampiro. Questo non gli impedisce di provare una forte attrazione per Alexis, l'unica che è veramente off-limits per una persona come lui.

Ci sarebbero state delle buone premesse per questa storia, Trystan è un personaggio particolare, un po' al di fuori degli schemi del branco in cui arriva, ma non è riuscita a decollare, la trama si e' sviluppata in modo un po' noioso e lento. Molto divertente l'arrivo del fratello vampiro di Trystan, un bel personaggio. Anche Alexis aveva delle potenzialità, che però non si sono pienamente espresse.

MOON KISSED: Bella è una giovane umana che viene salvata dall'assalto di un gruppo di vampiri da Severo, un lupo. A sua volta il caro ragazzo mostra un certo interesse e attrazione verso Bella, cosa che la spaventa non poco, visto l'aggressione appena scampata.

Severo decide di sorvegliare e proteggere la giovane, per cui i vampiri sembrano nutrire un pericoloso interesse. Tra Bella e Severo si instaura una profonda attrazione che li spinge inesorabilmente l'uno verso l'altra.

Questo racconto mi è piaciuto ancor meno del precedente. La storia è un po' inverosimile. La giovane che non sa nulla di vampiri e lupi mutaforma non batte ciglio nel scoprire la loro esistenza.

Rischia di subire un'aggressione, ha paura di essere stuprata da Severo e poi ci finisce a letto ed è l'amore della sua vita. Va beh che è un mondo paranormal, ma un po' di senso e credibilità ci vuole comunque.

The first thing to say about the two stories contained in this book, because they are actually two novellas, is that of two of don't make a whole one.

You can tell from this that I didn't enjoy the book too much, but let's speak separately of the two stories.

FOREVER WEREWOLF: Alexis Conner is the Princess of the Alpine pack, despite being the daughter of alpha, she lives a solitary life inside the pack due to a terrible secret that prevents her from being a normal element of the werewolves. A beautiful Ice Princess, for all to see. Trystan Hawke arrives at the Castle Wulfsiege to fulfill a very important Commission, as requested by his father. He remains locked in place due to an avalanche and he lends his aid to rescue components of the pack. They don't know him and they would be not so friendly if they found out his origins: the boy is in fact half werewolf and half vampire. This doesn't stop him from feeling a strong attraction to Alexis, the only one that is really off limits for a person like him.

There were some good ideas for this story, Trystan is a smart and funny guy, his acts are not so convenctional for the pack, but this has not managed to make the book good enough, the plot developed somewhat tedious and slow. Very funny the arrival of Trystan's vampire brother,, quite a character. Alexis also had potential, but she hasn't not fully expressed it.

MOON KISSED: Bella is a young man who is saved from an assault by a group of vampires from Severus, a werewolf. The dear boy shows some interest and attraction to Bella, who is a little scared, she just escaped an aggression.

Severus decides to supervise and protect the girl, because the vampires show a dangerous interest in her. Between Bella and Severus develops a deep attraction that drives them inexorably toward each other.

This story I liked even less than its predecessor. The story is not so real possible. The girl, who knows nothing about vampires and wolves isn't shocked a little in discovering their existence.

She had just under an attack, afraid of being raped by Severus and then they ended up in bed and he's the love of her life. Okay that is a world of paranormal, but some meaning and credibility it takes anyway.

Blacque/Bleu by Belinda McBride

Blacque/Blue e' il primo libro della serie Arcada di Belinda McBride, e' un paranormal romance M/M, scritto veramente molto bene, con due splendidi personaggi principali Oliver Bleu, un vampiro e Lukas Blacque un lupo mutaforma, scusate ma il termine lupo mannaro proprio non mi piace.

La storia si svolge d Arcada una città apparentemente tranquilla, ma che nasconde bene i suoi segreti legati alla magia e al soprannaturale; qui vivono insieme pacificamente umani, vampiri, fae, mutaforma senza, a volte, essere consapevoli della reale natura gli uni degli altri. Ci sono delle regole da rispettare per il quieto vivere tra le diverse creature, ma tutto le accettano di buon grado.

Blacque e' un lupo solitario, che nasconde il fatto di essere gay a tutti, soprattutto alla sua famiglia e al suo branco, aiutato in questo dalla sua natura riservata, il suo aspetto intimidatorio e dalla passione per il suo lavoro: ama restaurare e aggiustare macchine d'epoca. Vicino a lui abita un vampiro Bleu, bellissimo e da cui si sente profondamente attratto, anche se le condizioni di salute di Bleu, con gli anni, lo hanno indebolito e debilitato profondamente.

Blacque non intende venire allo scoperto, preferisce nascondere la sua reale natura, che non verrebbe mai accettata dal branco e tutto si complica ulteriormente quando Dane, suo padre e alpha del branco, decide che i due figli dovranno fornire degli eredi al branco e rafforzare la linea genealogica del gruppo passando ai figli la loro rara capacita' di mutare forma anche solo parzialmente.

E' una vera e propria imposizione per Blacque e Drusilla, l'ultimo dei loro desideri, ma attraverso ricatti morali e importanza della gerarchia il capo branco forza la meno per ottenere quello che desidera. Blacque e Bleu scoprono di essere per profondamente attratti l'uno dall'altra e il lupo decide di concedersi per un weekend di sperimentare e dare sfogo a quello che prova per il vampiro, per poi concedere al padre quello che desidera.

Entrambi gli uomini soffrono, ma decidono di accettare la realtà dei fatti, e Bleu deve anche affrontare il ritorno del vampiro che e' il suo creatore, che farà di tutto per riavere in suo potere l'uomo per cui nutre una vera e propria ossessione.

La trama e' veramente bella e ben sviluppata, ricca di vari elementi, oltre alla storia di Blacque e Bleu. Sono due anime tormentate in modo diverso, ma che insieme sono perfette. Il loro rapporto e' intenso e commovente.

Oltre a loro due, l'intera dinamica del branco e la presenza di personaggi secondari che contribuiscono a rendere la storia più elaborata e interessante.

Non vedo l'ora di leggere il secondo libro della serie che e' già nelle mie manine...

Blacque/Blue is the first book in Belinda McBride's Arcada Series, it's a paranormal romance, M/M, written very well, with two beautiful main characters: Oliver Bleu, a vampire and Lukas Blacque a werewolf .

The story takes place in Arcada a very quiet town at first sight, but that hides well its secrets related to magic and the supernatural; here live together peacefully humans, vampires, fae, werewolves without sometimes being aware of the true nature of each other. Rules must to be followed by the different creatures to live together in peace, but everyone accept them willingly.

Blacque is a lone wolf, he's a closeted gay and he's hiding his sexuality especially to his family and to his pack, aided in this by his reserved nature, his intimidating look and passion for his work: he likes restoring vintage car. He lives near a vampire Bleu, a beautiful guy and he feels deeply attracted to him, even if, over the years, Bleu became weakened and debilitated, he's still gorgeus.

Blacque thinks that he would never accepted by his pack if they know about him and everything is complicated further when Dane, his father and alpha of the Pack, decides that his son and his daughter must provide for the pack and strengthen the genealogical line, passing their children their rare ability to partially shift.

It is a real imposition for Blacque and Drusilla, the last of their desires, but through moral blackmail and the leadersheap of the alpha Pack Dane force to get what he wants. Blacque and Bleu discover to be deeply attracted to each other and the Wolf live a weekend with the Vampire, to experiment and live his life like he dreamed of, only for a brief time.

Both men suffer, but decide to accept the reality of the facts.
Blue must face a terrible danger: the return of his own creator, who will do anything in his power to get the man for whom he feels a real obsession.

The plot is really beautiful and well developed, rich in various elements, apart from the story of Blacque and Bleu. They are two souls tormented differently, but that together they are perfect. Their relationship is intense and touching.

Besides Blacque and Bleu, the entire dynamics of the pack and the presence of secondary characters help to make the story more elaborate and interesting.

Can't wait to read the second book in the series that it's already in my hands ...

The Love of my (other) Life by Traci L. Slatton

La lettura di questo libro mi ha lasciato un po' perplessa, soprattutto dopo aver visto alcuni rating molto più alti del mio nei vari siti. Diciamo che non sono riuscita ad apprezzarlo pienamente, forse...

Tessa Barnum e' una giovane donna in un momento molto difficile della sua vita: e' reduce dal fallimento del suo matrimonio, pittrice che ha appena sorpassato una fase in cui aveva abbandonato la sua arte e ha grossi problemi economici. Questo non le vieta di essere una donna di grande cuore, votata ad aiutare il prossimo e forse anche questo e' uno dei suoi problemi, voler aiutare sempre gli altri, senza pensare a se stessa. All'improvviso la sua vita viene sconvolta dall'arrivo di uno strano uomo, Brian, che afferma di provenire da una realtà parallela dove lui e la donna sono sposati.

Tessa crede sia il solito svitato vagabondo, ma l'uomo, in qualche modo, sembra conoscere cose di lei, che un estraneo non potrebbe sapere. Perché Brian cerca così ostinatamente di imporle la sua presenza, qual e' il suo fine?

Ecco per scoprire la risposta a questa domanda ce n'è voluto di tempo, più di meta' libro.

Il vero problema e' stato che, nell'avvicendarsi di capitoli che si spostano dal presente, alla realtà parallela di Brian, non sembra esserci un vero filo logico della trama. Uno deve continuare la lettura per capire dove vuole andare a parare la storia.

Il personaggio di Tessa l'ho trovato a tratti irritante, con i suoi atteggiamenti per lo meno confusi e poco maturi per una donna della sua età.

Il Brian della parte iniziale del libro poi si contraddice, con quello che afferma con il progredire della storia e le sue elucubrazioni matematico-fisiche a volte sono un po' pesanti.

Insomma l'idea poteva essere buona e l'ironia di cui e' dotata la scrittrice nello scrivere poteva dare origine a una storia molto più carina, a mio parere.

Uno dei pochi lati positivi che ho trovato e' stato un momento veramente toccante e commovente tra Tessa e Brian verso il finale del libro, pero' mi sembra un po' poco per reggere tutto il resto.

La copertina poi non la riesco a collocare proprio con il libro.

Reading this book left me a little puzzled, especially after seeing some much higher rating from various sites. Let's say, maybe I'm not really good to  appreciate it fully....

Tessa Barnum is a young woman in a very difficult time of her life: she's  recovering from the failure of her marriage, a painter who has just passed years where she had abandoned his art and has big economic problems. This doesn't change the fact of being a woman with a big heart, devoted to help others and perhaps this is one of her problems, She always wants to help others, without thinking to herself. Suddenly her life is turned upside down by the arrival of a strange man, Brian, who claims to come from a parallel reality where he and the woman were married.

Tessa thinks he's a poor mad guy, but the man somehow seems to know things about her, that a stranger  might not know. Why does Brian want so stubbornly to force his presence, what is it his purpose?

Well  to find out the answer to that question I have to read, more than half of the book.

The real problem was that the succession of chapters where you have to move from the present reality to the  parallel reality of Brian, and this thing doesn't agree to give a real logical Threads of the plot. One must continue to read to figure out where he wants to prove his point in the story.

Sometimes I found annoying Tessa's character, with her attitudes at the very least confused and not quite good for a woman of her age.

Brian in the beginning of the bookat  contradicts  himself  with the  progress of story and his mathematical-physical ruminations are sometimes a bit heavy.

In short the idea could be good and the irony of  the writer writing could create a much more cute story, in my opinion.

One of the few positive thing I found it was a very touching and heartwarming moment between Tessa and Brian to the ending of the book, but this cannot  hold the rest of the book.

The cover doesn't look right with the book.

Keowee Valley by Katherine Scott Crawford

Keowee Valley è un bellissimo libro historical, ambientato nei territori di frontiera del sud di quelli che dovranno poi divenire gli Stati Uniti d'America. Il periodo storici infatti si riferisce agli anni appena precedenti alla guerra d'Indipendenza dei nuovi americani nei confronti dell'Inghilterra.

Tutto comincia nella primavera del 1768, quando una giovane donna Quincy MacFadden, di origine scozzese, cresciuta dal nonno sin dalla più tenera infanzia, dopo la morte dei genitori, scopre che il cugino Owen non è morto, come lei e il nonno credevano, ma tenuto prigioniero dalla tribù degli Shawnee.

Quincy, che è una ragazza ribelle, che non accetta le imposizioni e i giudizi di una cittadina come Charleston, nei confronti del suo desiderio di essere realmente se stessa, decide di cogliere l'occasione e convincere il nonno a inviarla nella Carolina del Sud per tentare di contrattare la liberazione del cugino, con l'aiuto di qualche intermediario del posto e, nello stesso tempo, trasferirsi là e dare vita alla vita che ha sempre sognato per lei, in quel territorio di frontiera selvaggio, di cui ha sempre letto nei libri.

La sua è una vera sfida al destino, i pericoli che l'attendono immensi, ma lei è testarda e sa che questa potrebbe essere la sua unica possibilità per vivere nel modo che ha sempre desiderato.

Arrivata a destinazione riesce a barattare con un capo indiano la proprietà di un terreno dove vuole costruire la sua casa con l'aiuto di persone che l'aiuteranno a coltivarla e allevare animali, in cambio a loro volta della possibilità di costruirsi una casa.

Quincy riesce a contattare, tramite il capo indiano, Jack Wolf, un uomo mezzosangue che è l'unica persona in grado di aiutarla a far liberare il cugino, ma questo è solo l'inizio di una splendida avventura, nella nuova vita di Quincy, e Jack è per lei la sorpresa che il destino ha riservato alla donna che ha giurato sin da piccola di non sposarsi e non assoggettarsi mai a un uomo.

Jack è un uomo però che vive tra due mondi, la sua lealtà va al suo popolo indiano e questa sarà una cosa con cui fare i conti con l'arrivo della guerra, dove verrà chiamato a rispettare i suoi doveri nei confronti della Corona, perché in questo caso Jack è anche un uomo di origine irlandese, con dei doveri da portare a termine. Accettare vorrebbe dire tradire la sua anima, rifiutare lo farebbe accusare di alto tradimento e da questa scelta dipenderà la vita di Jack e Quincy.

La scrittrice in questo suo primo romanzo è riuscita a costruire una storia che fornisce un contesto storico ben definito, senza essere pesante, e dona uno spaccato realistico della vita dell'epoca: la difficile convivenza tra coloni e nativi americani, lo scontro che comincia a nascere tra la vecchia Europa e la nuova America, le avversità affrontate dai coloni per realizzare il sogno che li ha spinti in queste terre selvagge, il miraggio di una nuova vita e della libertà.

I paesaggi stupendi in cui è ambientata la storia sono descritti nei minimi dettagli e sembra quasi di poter vedere quelle terra ancora selvagge in cui domina la legge della natura.

In tutto questo si inserisce la storia tra Quincy e Jack, storia d'amore non convenzionale, come i due splendidi personaggi. Un uomo diviso tra i due mondi, dallo spirito selvaggio, ma leale e una donna al di fuori delle regole del buon costume, con uno spirito indomito e una apertura mentale, che la porta a rispettare il diverso e amare un mondo totalmente differente da quello nel quale è stata allevata. La loro non è la solita storia d'amore romantica, ma un incontro di due anime perfette l'una per l'altra, che affrontano un percorso per trovarsi e vivere una vita unica insieme.

Il finale, secondo me può considerarsi abbastanza aperto e forse dare luogo a un seguito.

Keowee Valley is a beautiful historical book set in Southern frontier of what would become par of the United States of America. The historical period in fact refers to the years just before the war of independence of the new Americans.

We are in the spring of 1768, when a young woman Quincy MacFadden, of Scottish origin, grown by his grandfather since her earliest childhood, after the death of her parents, discovers that her cousin Owen is not dead, as she and her grandfather believed, but held prisoner from the Shwnee Indian.

Quincy, who is a rebellious girl, who does not accept the impositions and the judgments of a town like Charleston, against herdesire to be really herself, decides that this is her chance and she convinces Grandpa to send her in South Carolina to try to negotiate the release of her cousin, with the help of some local intermediary and, at the same time, she want to try to live the life that she has always dreamed of, in that wild frontier territory.

She challenges to fate, the dangers that await are huge, but she is stubborn and she knows that this might be her only chance to live the way she has always wanted.

Arrived at destination she trades with an Indian Chief for the ownership of the land where she wants to build her new house with the help of other settlers: she offers them land to build their own houses for their work.

Quincy managed to contact, Jack Wolf, a halfbreed man who is the only person who can help her to rescue her cousin, but this is only the beginning of a wonderful adventure, in new Quncy's life, and Jack is the surprise that the fate reserved to the woman who swore since she was small child not to marry and submit to anyman.

Jack is a man who lives between two worlds, his loyalty goes to his Indian people and this is something it will be a great problem with the arrival of war, where he'll be called to fulfil his duties towards the Crown, because in this case Jack is also a man of Irish descent. Accepting it would mean betraying his soul, to refuse it would accuse him of high treason and by this choice it will depend Jack and Quincy's life.

This the first novel by this author and she has managed to build a story that provides a well defined historical context without being heavy, and it gives a realistic view of life at the time: the difficult coexistence between settlers and native Americans, the battle that begins to arise between old Europe and new America, the very hard reality affronted by the settlers in order to achieve the dream that has pushed them into these wildlands, the lure of a new life and freedom.

In this novel are described beautiful landscapes, with details that it seems almost to be able to see those still wild land dominated by the law of nature.

Throughout this fits the story between Quincy and Jack, an unconventional love story, as the two wonderful characters. A man torn between two worlds, a wild spirit, but loyal and a woman outside the rules of morality, with a free spirit and open-mindedness, who takes her to fall in love with a world totally different from that in which she was bred. Theirs is not the usual romantic love story, but a meeting of two souls are perfect for each other, soulmate, they face a difficut path for living their unique life together.

The ending, in my opinion can be considered quite open and perhaps lead to a sequel.
